I appreciated the connection to good character traits that is needed to make a hero. The connections to service for generations of this family and their relations were presented well. the hard choices and sacrifices of family in language and situations youngsters can understand.

The (Childhood of Famous Americans) books are all well written exciting stories. They may be written for kids but as an adult I learned things about these men and women that defined who they would become.

I bought this not realizing that it was in fact a biography of only the Childhood of Robert E. Lee. It's interesting for what it is, but I wanted his adult life biography. My mistake.

This book was a very nice source of informationon Robert E Lee. It was perfect for a book report

Love it

Buyers should be aware that this volume was written in 1937! Perhaps it was ahead of its time then by not pointedly referencing racial stereotypes, but by 1986 when it was republished, it was already shockingly outdated. There is no mention that the household retainers are slaves, or even servants. They're just there. Yes, it is written for children, but honesty needs to prevail at all levels of education. I'm not saying the man needs to be portrayed as a future traitor in this book about his childhood, but I can't imagine any person of color being comfortable reading this. It made this white person squirm.
