Orc prophets have forewarned her that danger is looming in the far north. In her most ambitious adventure yet, Marnie must harness her powers, gather trusted friends to wade into battle, and complete an international treasure hunt that would make Indiana Jones break into a cold sweat, before raising a new revenant house to rule from the Unhallowed Throne...and do it all without getting her heart or legs broken. Storms are brewing, threats are piling up, and the stakes are higher than ever, but Marnie is determined to dance with danger to the very end. There's only one thing left to do: deal with it, Baranuik-Style. Does anyone know if yetis like take-out? And when you're on a date with a mummy, who picks up the check?

I rarely take the time to rate books, especially any I've "borrowed" on Kindle Unlimited. I am a great fan of science fiction/fantasy and the paranormal, and have gone far past the limit of what my bookshelves can handle of real, paper books, thus my reluctant foray into the world of e-books.While I've been able to find a few gems through Amazon's book borrowing program, most of the available titles in the areas of my interest are formulaic, seriously lacking in proper editing, poor copycats of successful major published works, or excuses for 'authors' to indulge in writing pornography with no character, world, or story building evident. All that being said I am pleased to take the time to give my hearty recommendation for the Marnie Baranuik Files series. I have read all books so far, (and am eagerly hoping for more), so my review applies to them in entirety.Vampire literature has run the gamut from truly horrifying to ridiculous, but A. J. Aalto has managed to provide a fresh new perspective on vampire culture and history, along with a world that supports the idea of the 'supernatural' in an easy "suspension of disbelief". Her main characters are well fleshed, highly individualized, exhibiting dichotomies that real people have, (i.e., Marnie's extreme intelligence and education contrasting with her prolifically embellished profanities - or Harry's extreme concern for others vs. his lack of ability to love), and entirely believable in the world she's created. While there are some 'sex' scenes, they are entirely appropriate to the story, and they are not overdone. This series provide mystery, maudlin, adventure and humor at a great pace. I found myself laughing out loud at Marnie's "colorful metaphors" - so much so that I had to share her brilliant new ways of swearing with my husband, who has now been inspired to read the series.I stayed up too late many nights reading this series and am very much looking forward to doing so again. If you are a fan of the supernatural genre and are looking for something well written, well edited and highly entertaining - look no further.
Where to start? This book had me in the freezing snow and on a quest with Marnie and Declan. I mean, a gathering of revanants, a vampire hunter, a sassy heroine and a hapless ally (that'd be Declan), what could possibly go wrong?Everything, apparently. This story had me laughing, and the ending - did not see that coming. Okay, yes I DID know it was coming because I couldn't help but read spoilers (so sue me, I also read the ending in paperback romances before I read the whole story and I'm not ashamed to admit it!) but even though I knew it was coming, the actual events around it I didn't know. It truly left me stunned. So now I'm wondering - is it true? Could it be a trick? Is it truly the end? (I'm not giving away spoilers
What an imagination Ms. Aalto has! This is the 4th book in the series but complete in itself. While it is not strictly necessary to read the rest, I highly recommend starting with Touched and reading them in order including the short stories. Otherwise, you are going to wonder about “playing touch football with a Boogle†and other things. The world building is superb! Ms. Aalto takes myths and legends, blends them together with a twist to build her world of Revenants, Daysitters and Debt Vultures. Here, psychics are Daysitters for Revenants (so, insulting to call them vampires!) who borrow their abilities. There are 9 psychic powers and most revenants have one. Dr. Marnie Baranuik is a rare duo talent, a Grouper-Feeler. She can feel emotions as well as visions from touching. She is also a paranormal biologist with poor social skills, a foul mouth, a love of frogs, a major inferiority complex and is incredibly clumsy. The story starts with Marnie, having resigned from the FBI, opening her psychic detective agency. She is called to NY to handle an orc problem. An orc mystic tells her that she must save the world from Trollapocalpse. She just returns home to Colorado when the summons to the Revenant Court comes. So, with her revenant Harry and Mark Batten (aka Jerk-Face), they are off to visit the Unhallowed Throne. There, Marnie is knighted Sir Marnie of Toots. The new knight along with Sir Declan Edgar the Abomination and Batten head out on a quest to bring back three rescue-artifacts in order to establish a new ruler for the revenants. And let’s not forget the Trollapocalpse!Like the other stories, Wrath and Bones is hysterically funny! While there’s far too much swearing for my taste, Marnie can barely speak a sentence without swearing, it’s funny swearing. The situations that she gets herself into! Because of her inferiority complete and clumsiness, Marnie often underestimated, but make no mistake, she is a solid scientist who does know what she is doing – well for the most part!Besides the incredible world building and the humor, the characterization is excellent. Each character is a solid, 3-D person with strengths and weaknesses. There is no generic villain #1 in these stories!Let’s follow Sir Marnie of Toots around the world in an effort to crown the new ruler of the Revenants and stop the Trollapocalpse!
